USM Haller

USM develops its design classics by consistently remaining true to its vision: to create flexible, timeless and sustainable furniture that adapts to changing living and working environments. The modular system, based on three basic elements, enables continuous further development and guarantees backwards compatibility so that older models can also be easily extended.

USM furniture is characterized by precision, robustness and functionality, while sustainability is achieved through a long service life and efficient use of resources. These values make the products timeless, globally recognized design classics that create a balance between form and function.

Project details

USM - “Ulrich Schärer Münsingen” - stands for timeless design and the highest quality. The USM Haller modular furniture system was developed between 1962 and 1965. Its inclusion in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art MoMA in New York (USA) at the end of 2001 is a great honor and confirms the artistic character of the product. The well-known classic is used in the office world, in public buildings as well as in the private sector.

In spring 2013, USM took a major step forward with the introduction of a state-of-the-art powder coating facility. This facility, which cost over ten million Swiss francs and was built on an area the size of 14 tennis courts, is invisible underground and does not disrupt ongoing operations. Every day, 5600 square meters of metal elements for USM Modular Furniture Haller are coated here in 14 different colors. The fully automated process not only increases production capacity, but also flexibility, while at the same time minimizing the risk of production interruptions.

The new plant is at the heart of USM's commitment to “Swissness” and Switzerland as a production location. High quality standards and optimal production conditions are just as important as sustainability: the energy consumption of the coating processes has been reduced by up to 30 percent. These measures to increase efficiency and conserve resources are an active contribution to sustainability that USM is continuously pursuing. Overall, the facility helps to further reinforce USM's values of longevity, quality and value retention as the company dynamically adapts to growing global demands.
